Roman Art

When? in the 8th century BC.

Excelled in what? art and architecture. used arches, vaults, and concrete. (better than anyone else)
Arch- curved architectural element used to span an opening.
Vault- arched roof or covering made of brick, stone, or concrete. 

   
The Colosseum:
Walls: made of concrete, plaster and marble
Height: 16 stories high
Capacity: it held 50,000 people

The Pantheon:
walls: 20 feet thick
floors: 144 feet in diameter
dome: 144 feet from the floor and it is thicker at the base
Oculus: 30 feet wide whole at the top of the dome
Portico: front porch
drainage system: in the floor


Arch of Constantine:
celebrates what? Constantine's assumption of power 


Forum Romanum:  was a place for political gatherings, a mall, and a place of discussion

Aqueducts: (a marvel of engineering!)
use: was to bring water from the mountains down to there cities


Column of Trajan:
Trajan's ashes are inside and on the outside there are comic strips of Trajan's victories in battle

   

Mosaics:
size: 1/2 cm. each piece
smallest stones: 150 tiles per 1 square cm.

Egypt

1. Ancient architecture:
  • Mastabas- built by imhoten, first Egyptian to build structures.
  • In saqqara- 5 mastabas, stacked
  • made of limestone 
2. Giza
  • Khufu's pyramid:
    • base is 755 feet long
    • the largest of the three Giza pyramids
3. The Sphinx:
  • a giant statue of Khafre- across between a lion and a human.
  • 240 ft long, 66 ft tall!
  • lions guarded tombs & temples - they never sleep
4. Abu Sembel:
  • 4 statues of Ramses.
  • carved in living rock.
5. King Tut's Tomb:
  • it staid intact
  • 5,000 plus artifacts, art, food, plus the body were found
6. Nefertiti:
  • Queen to Akenaten-who created a sun-cult.
  • she was given high artistic prominence
  • famed to be the most beautiful women in Egypt.

Pre-history

  •  There is no known civilization that has not used some form of art or aesthetics. 

Some example are:

  • Venus of Willendorf -from Austria. c. 25,000-20,000 BCE limestone, height 4 3/8 inches. Naturhistorischesmuseum, Vienna.
  • Lascaux caves, France - 1,500, each bull is about 16 feet long.
  • Stonehenge, England - 2,800- 1,500 BC. post and lintel construction.
  • Ziggaurat or Step Pyramid - step pyramid at Saqqaroh, egypt, built in six stages for djoser, the second king of the 3rd dynasty.
